Cane sugar extraction plants employ a series of mechanical and chemical processes, including milling, diffusion, and carbonation, to extract sucrose from sugarcane juice. Through precise control of temperature, pH, and chemical additives, impurities are removed, and sucrose is crystallized and separated. Advanced technologies such as continuous vacuum pans and centrifugation ensure high efficiency and purity, contributing to the sustainability and competitiveness of the sugar production industry.

Cane sugar extraction plants are industrial facilities that process sugarcane, a tall perennial grass, to extract sucrose. The sucrose recovered is used to produce refined sugar, brown sugar, molasses and other sugarcane-based products, with downstream applications extending to rum, caramel and confectionery.

The process runs through six defined stages. Sugarcane is harvested and transported to the plant, where it is crushed using heavy machinery to extract the juice, which is collected and stored in tanks. The juice carries impurities such as dirt, fibres and organic acids, so lime and other chemicals are added to neutralise the acids and remove those impurities. The clarified juice is then heated in evaporators to drive off water and increase the concentration of sucrose. The concentrated juice is cooled and seeded with sugar crystals to initiate crystallisation, forming sucrose crystals, which are separated from the remaining liquid by centrifugation. The resulting raw sugar is then refined and processed into various grades of refined sugar, brown sugar, molasses and other sugarcane-based products.

The commercial case is set by a growing market. According to a report by Zion Market Research, the global sugar market was valued at USD 77.78 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach USD 116.22 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 5.5% during the forecast period. Rising population, increasing disposable income and changing food habits have lifted demand for sugarcane-based products globally, while the growing use of sugarcane-based ethanol as a biofuel — driven by the focus on renewable energy sources and cleaner fuels in the transportation sector — adds a second demand stream.

Geographically, Asia Pacific is the largest market for cane sugar extraction plants, driven by high demand for sugar and sugarcane-based products in countries such as India, China and Indonesia. South America, Africa and the Middle East are also expected to witness significant growth.
