Sugar beet preparation plants are facilities that process sugar beets into raw sugar. Sugar beets are a type of root vegetable containing high levels of sucrose, which can be extracted and processed into sugar. A typical plant moves the crop through several stages of processing — cleaning, slicing, diffusing, clarification, evaporation and centrifugation — with the raw sugar produced then available for further refining into a range of sugar products.
The sequence works as follows. Beets are first cleaned to remove dirt, rocks or other impurities present on the surface. The cleaned beets are sliced into thin pieces using specialised equipment, which increases the surface area and makes sucrose extraction easier. The slices are mixed with hot water in a diffuser, where the hot water dissolves the sucrose and creates a sugar-rich solution. That solution is separated from the beet pulp in a clarifier, which also removes remaining impurities. Several stages of evaporation then remove water and concentrate the sugar into a thick syrup known as raw sugar, and a centrifuge separates any remaining impurities to produce a higher-quality raw sugar.
