Decanters for edible oil separation

Decanters are crucial in edible oil production, employing centrifugal force to separate oil from solids and liquids. In a continuous process, the decanter spins the oil-water mixture, forcing heavier phases outward while lighter oil collects at the center. Variable speed control and adjustable parameters ensure optimal separation efficiency. Decanters play a pivotal role in maintaining product quality and yield in the edible oil industry.

Decanters for edible oil separation are high-speed centrifugal machines built around a rotating drum or bowl that separates crude oil mixtures on the basis of density differences. The oil mixture typically arriving at the decanter contains oil, water and solid impurities; inside the bowl the feed is accelerated to speeds typically ranging from 2000 to 4000 rotations per minute, forcing the heavier solids outward while the oil and water move toward the centre. Separated liquid and solid streams leave through separate outlets.

For an edible oil plant, the value of the decanter lies in what it removes. Fibres, proteins and other contaminants carried through from the raw material affect both the quality and the shelf life of the finished oil. Clarified oil goes on to further purification through refining, bleaching and deodorization, while the discharged solids can be processed and used for other purposes. Decanters are also used to improve the efficiency of the production process, cutting the time and energy needed to produce large volumes of oil.

Typical applications include soybean oil, palm oil (removing impurities and separating oil from water and solids), canola oil, fish oils (separating oil from bones and skin) and animal fats (separating fat from bones and tissue). Decanter technology supports this by extracting more oil from raw materials, reducing waste and lowering the carbon footprint of oil production.
