With frozen pizzas, dinner is served in minutes.

Frozen pizzas are pre-cooked pizzas that have been frozen and packaged for sale in supermarkets, grocery stores and other retail outlets. They are typically built on a pre-baked crust and finished with sauce, cheese and various toppings such as meats, vegetables and herbs. For a processor, the product is essentially a short assembly line of separately prepared components brought together, baked and then frozen — which means the plant layout has to handle dough, sauce, toppings and a freezing and packaging hall as distinct but tightly sequenced areas.

Commercial production follows six steps. Dough preparation comes first. The sauce that will go on the pizza is prepared next. Once the sauce is ready, the pizza toppings are assembled. The components are then assembled onto the pizza crust to create the final product. The assembled pizza is baked in a high-temperature oven to cook the crust and melt the cheese. Finally, once the pizzas have been baked, they are quickly frozen to preserve their freshness, and packaged.

The category is dominated by a small group of established manufacturers. Major players in the market include Nestle SA, Dr. Oetker GmbH, Conagra Brands, Inc., General Mills, Inc. and Schwan's Company. Any new entrant is therefore designing against the cost, throughput and consistency benchmarks those producers already meet, which puts a premium on getting the dough, baking and freezing lines right at the concept stage.
