Soya oil
Soybean oil, also known as soya oil, is a vegetable oil extracted from soybeans. It is low in saturated fat and high in healthy unsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are considered essential for good health, and it contains vitamin E, an important antioxidant. Its high smoke point and neutral flavour make it a mainstay in cooking, baking and frying, and it is used as an ingredient in margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressings and baked goods. Beyond food, it feeds the production of biodiesel, industrial lubricants, printing inks and plastics.
Commercial production follows a defined sequence. The soya beans are first cleaned to remove impurities or foreign materials, then cracked into smaller pieces to facilitate oil extraction. The cracked beans are heated to about 60-70°C to make them easier to press, and then pressed to release the oil, which may be done using hydraulic presses that exert pressure on the beans. The extracted oil may be refined further to remove impurities, improve colour and enhance stability, through degumming, neutralization, bleaching and deodorization.
The finished oil is packaged in suitable containers such as glass bottles or metal cans so it stays fresh and safe for consumption, and is then distributed to wholesalers, retailers and other customers, either directly or through intermediaries. Distribution involves transportation and storage that maintain product quality and safety, which makes packaging format and cold-chain-free storage stability a real design consideration for any soya oil plant.
The market scope for soya oil is significant and is expected to keep growing on the back of an increasing population, changing dietary habits and rising demand for biofuels and industrial applications. As consumers seek out healthy food products, demand for soya oil as a versatile cooking oil for frying, baking and salad dressings is expected to increase, while governments worldwide reducing reliance on fossil fuels drive biodiesel demand.
