Argan oil is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree, native to Morocco, and is also known as Moroccan oil or liquid gold because of its many benefits and uses. It is high in vitamin E, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, which make it valued for nourishing and moisturizing the skin, hair and nails, and it is widely used as a beauty treatment. In food, it carries a nutty flavour and is used as a condiment or as an ingredient in dishes such as salads, couscous and grilled meats.
Commercial production takes place primarily in Morocco, where the argan tree is well adapted to the country's semi-arid climate and is grown mainly in the southwestern region, particularly the Sous Valley and the High Atlas Mountains. The process begins with collecting the argan fruit, which resembles a small yellow-green olive. The fruit is sun-dried and the pulp removed to reveal the argan nut inside a hard shell. The nuts are hand-cracked using stones to release the kernels, which are roasted to bring out their nutty flavour, ground into a paste in a stone mill, and kneaded by hand to extract the oil. The resulting oil is golden-yellow with a distinctive nutty aroma and can be processed further into cosmetic argan oil or culinary argan oil depending on its intended use.
The global argan oil market was valued at USD 223.7 million in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 406.7 million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 7.8% during the forecast period. Rising awareness about the benefits of natural and organic products, together with increasing consumer disposable income, has driven demand for argan oil-based cosmetics and personal care products, particularly in the premium and luxury segments where its anti-aging, moisturizing and nourishing properties are prized. Alongside cosmetics and personal care, argan oil is used in the food industry, particularly in gourmet and high-end food markets.
