Pressing is a pivotal operation across industries, essential for compressing materials or shaping them into desired forms through the application of force. Hydraulic or mechanical presses, equipped with adjustable pressure settings, are commonly employed for this purpose. Advanced techniques may utilize programmable controls to ensure precise force application and monitoring. Pressing is integral to manufacturing processes, facilitating material densification, shaping, and consolidation for various applications.
Pressing is a mechanical extraction process used in the food industry to recover liquids, oils and juices from fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts. Pressure is applied to the food material to release the desired liquid or oil, which then goes on to be used for purposes such as cooking, baking and food preservation. Because it uses force rather than harsh chemicals or solvents, pressing is generally preferred over chemical extraction as a more natural and environmentally friendly route.
Three pressing methods are in common use. In hydraulic pressing, the material is placed between two plates and hydraulic pressure is applied to extract the liquid or oil; the plates are then separated and the extract collected. In screw pressing, material is fed into a chamber where a rotating screw or auger applies pressure, forcing the liquid or oil out through a filter that separates it from the solid matter. In centrifugal pressing, the material is spun at high speed in a centrifuge and centrifugal force separates the liquid or oil from the solids, which are collected separately.
Typical applications include vegetable oils, coconut oil, olive oil, nut butter and fruit and vegetable juices. Oils are pressed from seeds and nuts such as sunflower seeds, soybeans, peanuts and sesame seeds, while juices are pressed from produce such as apples, grapes, carrots and spinach. The extracted oils and juices feed into salad dressings, sauces, baked goods and beverages.
Pressing is a significant part of the global food processing sector, and demand for pressed products is growing as consumers seek healthy, natural and minimally processed foods with no additives. The global vegetable oil market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.4% between 2020 and 2025, driven by rising demand for healthy cooking oils, while the global organic food market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.4% over the same period. Equipment ranges from small manual presses for home use to large industrial presses for commercial processing, with strong growth expected particularly in developing regions where demand for locally sourced and processed food products is rising.
