Safe Plant Design: Keep Electronics Away from Open Product Lines
Keeping electronics away from open product lines reduces contamination risks and protects equipment from moisture, cleaning chemicals, and accidental product exposure.
One of the simplest rules in food and beverage plant layout is also one of the most frequently broken: never place electronics under open product lines. Control panels, junction boxes, drives, sensor terminations and instrument enclosures should not sit beneath pipework, vessels, hoppers or transfer points where product, water or cleaning fluid can fall on them.
The reason is that anything positioned below an open line will eventually receive drips, dust or an accidental splash. That exposure can cause dangerous short circuits, taking equipment and the line down without warning — and where the same event contaminates or compromises product, it can end in a product recall.
Getting this right is a design decision, not a housekeeping one. Electrical and instrumentation positions have to be fixed while the process layout is still on paper, so that panels and enclosures are routed clear of product zones, wash-down paths and condensate drip lines rather than relocated after commissioning.
