Tank venting in the food industry refers to the controlled release of excess pressure or vacuum from storage tanks used to store food products, ensuring their safety, integrity, and quality by preventing damage and contamination.
Air is one of the most important possible sources of contamination in the environment of food production. If the air utilised in the process is contaminated, both the quality and the shelf life of the product are at hazard. Tank venting in the food industry is the process of releasing excess pressure or vacuum from storage tanks used for various food products, maintaining the integrity and safety of the tanks, preventing potential damage, and ensuring the stored food products remain in good condition.
Two components carry the load. A pressure relief valve deals with the gases produced as food products undergo temperature changes, chemical reactions or other processes; without relief, excessive pressure can cause the tank to rupture or leak, damaging the contents and creating safety hazards. A vacuum relief valve deals with the opposite case, where pressure inside the tank drops below atmospheric pressure — typically when food products cool down or shrink, or when the tank is being emptied. A vacuum can collapse the tank and compromise its structural integrity, so the vacuum relief valve opens to admit air and equalise pressure. Both valve types open automatically when the pressure inside the tank exceeds a certain set limit, or falls below a certain limit, as applicable.
Implementation follows a defined sequence. Pressure relief valves and vacuum relief valves are installed on each storage tank, made from food-grade materials to prevent contamination. Set points are established so valves open when pressure inside the tank exceeds safe levels or when vacuum conditions threaten tank integrity. Stable temperatures are maintained to minimise pressure fluctuations, and product transfers are handled cautiously to avoid sudden pressure changes arising from temperature or volume shifts.
The remaining steps are procedural but no less binding. Emergency protocols are established for relief valve failures or sudden pressure spikes; tank venting is confirmed to meet food safety regulations; records of inspections, maintenance and valve settings are kept; personnel are trained to recognise pressure-related issues and respond appropriately; and detailed records of all venting activities and incidents are maintained.
