Oilseed preparation plants in the food industry are specialized facilities or sections within food processing plants that focus on the preparation and processing of oilseeds for various food products. Oilseeds are seeds with a high oil content, and they are a crucial source of vegetable oils used in cooking, baking, and food manufacturing. Some common oilseeds processed in these plants include soybeans, sunflower seeds, canola seeds, rapeseeds, and peanuts.

Oilseed preparation plants process oilseeds such as soybeans, canola, sunflower seeds and flaxseed to extract oil for use in various applications. These facilities typically receive raw oilseeds from farmers or other suppliers and convert them into oil, meal and other by-products through a series of mechanical and chemical processes that extract the oil and refine it into a usable product.

The process line runs in six stages. Cleaning removes foreign materials such as stones, dirt or plant debris from the raw seed. Conditioning heats and moisturises the cleaned seed to facilitate extraction. Crushing breaks the conditioned seed into smaller pieces and releases the oil. Extraction is then carried out by either solvent extraction, which uses a chemical solvent to dissolve the oil, or mechanical extraction, which presses the oil out using a screw press. Refining removes impurities such as free fatty acids, phospholipids and pigments, and the refined oil is packaged into containers such as bottles, cans or drums for shipping to customers.

The output feeds a wide range of food categories: cooking oils such as soybean, canola, sunflower and corn oil; margarine and spreads; salad dressings; snack and baked foods including potato chips, popcorn, crackers, cakes and cookies; dairy alternatives such as plant-based milk and yoghurts; and processed meats such as sausages and hot dogs. The meal, or solid residue left after oil extraction, is typically used as animal feed or fertiliser, while other by-products include hulls, which can be used as fuel, and lecithin, a valuable ingredient in many food products.

Global demand for vegetable oils is expected to continue growing due to increasing population, rising disposable incomes and changing dietary habits. Four forces shape investment decisions in this sector: technological advancement, including automation and robotics, precision agriculture and data analytics, which lifts efficiency, productivity and output; sustainability and traceability, with companies reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving water and promoting biodiversity to meet consumer demands; international trade agreements and policies, which affect market access, prices and competitiveness; and consolidation, as larger companies acquire smaller ones to improve efficiency, reduce costs and expand reach and capabilities.
