Almonds

Almonds

Almonds, nature's powerhouse, offer a bounty of nutrients packed into a tiny package. With a rich history dating back thousands of years, these versatile nuts are celebrated for their heart-healthy fats, protein, fiber, and array of vitamins and minerals. From snacking to cooking, almonds add a delightful crunch and nutty flavor, elevating dishes and promoting overall wellness with every bite.

Almonds are a tree nut consumed widely around the world, both as a snack in their own right and as an ingredient across foods and snack formats. The nut has a hard outer shell that must be removed to reach the edible part; the edible portion is the white kernel inside the shell. Almonds are high in protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals, which is the basis of their positioning as a healthy and nutritious food choice.

For a processor, the almond kernel is a platform ingredient rather than a single product. Common almond products include almond butter, a spread made from ground almonds that can substitute for peanut butter; almond milk, a plant-based milk made from ground almonds used as a dairy milk substitute in cooking and baking; almond flour, made from ground almonds and used as a substitute for wheat flour in baking; almond extract, a flavouring agent used in baking and cooking; almond snack bars made from almonds, nuts, seeds and other ingredients and marketed as a healthy snack option; and almond oil, used in cooking and as a skincare product.

The commercial chain runs through five stages. Growing requires a specific set of environmental conditions, including warm temperatures, ample sunlight and well-drained soil. Harvesting takes place in the fall when the nuts are ripe, either by hand or mechanically depending on the size of the orchard. Processing removes the inedible outer hull, after which the almonds are either roasted or left raw depending on the intended use, with roasting enhancing flavour and texture. Packaging into bags, boxes or cans keeps the product fresh and safe and carries labelling and branding. Distribution then moves the product to wholesalers, retailers and other customers, with transportation and storage managed to maintain quality and safety.

Demand is driven by increasing awareness of the health benefits of almonds, and by the rising incidence of lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease alongside the growth of plant-based diets, all of which push demand for healthy and functional foods. Use of almonds in the cosmetic and personal care industry is also expected to grow, as almonds are a good source of vitamin E and other nutrients beneficial for skin health.
