Frozen vegetarian meal
Frozen vegetarian meals are pre-prepared meals that do not contain any meat or fish and are designed to be stored in the freezer for later consumption specifically catered to vegetarians. They provide a convenient option for those who are busy, want to minimize cooking time, or need to maintain a vegetarian or plant-based diet.
Frozen vegetarian meals are commercially manufactured food products designed for freezing and subsequent storage at sub-zero temperatures. They are specifically formulated to exclude any ingredients derived from animals, including meat, poultry, seafood, and their by-products, adhering to the principles of vegetarian diets. Certain vegetarian meals may include dairy unless they are certified vegan, which is a formulation and labelling decision the manufacturer must fix early.
Production begins with the careful selection of plant-based ingredients, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and plant-based proteins. These ingredients undergo preparation, cooking, and assembly into various ready-to-cook or ready-to-eat meal formats. Once assembled, the meals are rapidly frozen to extremely low temperatures of -18°C to -30°C to preserve their quality and extend their shelf life.
Freezing duration varies with factors such as the size and thickness of the food and the specific requirements of the recipe, so freezer sizing follows the product mix rather than a single throughput figure. Blast freezers or tunnel freezers are used commercially, rapidly circulating extremely cold air around the food to reduce its temperature quickly. Once properly stored at the recommended temperature of -18°C, frozen meals can have a shelf life of several months to a year, because freezing prevents the growth of harmful bacteria and preserves meal quality across that extended shelf life.
