Pneumatic conveying is a method used to transport bulk materials, including bulk food materials, from one location to another through a pipeline or duct system using air or other gases as the conveying medium. It is commonly employed in various industries, including the food industry, to move powdered or granular materials efficiently and hygienically.

Pneumatic conveying is a material handling process that uses controlled airflow within enclosed pipelines or ducts to move bulk food materials — powders, granules and grains — from one location to another. It is a precise transport method that relies on compressed air: air is injected at the base of the hopper to create a fluidised bed that suspends the food material in the airflow, and the resulting mixture travels through a sealed pipeline system designed to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination.

For a food plant, the appeal is that the material never leaves a closed path. Because the system is sealed end to end, the risk of contamination is minimised and the hygiene of the transported material is maintained, while dust emissions are reduced — which makes for a safer and cleaner working environment on the floor. Systems of this type are specified around hygiene, ease of cleaning and compliance with food safety standards.

The other reasons plants choose pneumatic conveying are layout and operating economics. Pipelines can be designed to fit into existing layouts and adapt to various production processes, carrying material horizontally, vertically or at different angles to suit the flow of the facility. They can cover long distances and complex routes with minimal energy consumption compared with mechanical conveying methods, occupy less floor space than other conveying options, and are easily automated for precise control over material flow rates, routing and delivery points.
