Tank Uses in Food Processing
Tanks play a vital role in food processing, facilitating storage, mixing, and fermentation of various ingredients. They are used for storing raw materials, intermediate products, and final goods, enhancing efficiency and meeting hygiene standards in the food industry while providing a controlled environment.
A tank is a container or vessel designed to hold and store the various substances, ingredients or products handled in food processing. In the food industry, tanks are made from food-grade hygienic materials such as stainless steel, and they come in a range of shapes and sizes to suit the specific needs of different processes. Tanks can be customised to the requirements of the individual food factory, including the layout of the production area and the types of products being processed.
Tanks are specified by duty. Storage tanks hold raw materials, ingredients and finished products. Mixing and blending tanks bring ingredients together into homogeneous mixtures. Fermentation tanks provide a controlled environment for the growth of microorganisms in foods and beverages such as yogurt, cheese, beer and wine. Cooking and heating tanks are used for cooking, pasteurisation and heating, and are built to withstand high temperatures so that products are properly cooked. CIP (Clean-In-Place) tanks allow equipment and tanks to be cleaned without disassembly. Cooling and chilling tanks bring product temperature down quickly using chilled water or refrigerants, and aging and maturation tanks let products such as cheese, wine and spirits mature and develop flavour over time.
On the specification side, tanks are typically made from stainless steel (304 or 316) for corrosion resistance, durability and ease of cleaning. Construction follows sanitary design principles, with smooth interior surfaces that are easy to clean and discourage bacterial growth, and the interior surface is given a polished or mirror finish that meets sanitary requirements. Insulation and heating or cooling provisions are required where temperature control must be maintained, and safety features such as pressure relief valves, temperature sensors and level indicators guard against overpressure and support safe operation.
