Instant hot beverages

Instant hot beverages

Instant hot beverages are beverages that are designed to be quickly prepared by adding hot water. These products are often available in powdered or granulated form, and they dissolve in hot water to create a ready-to-drink beverage.

Instant hot beverages — instant coffee, instant tea and instant hot chocolate — are popular and convenient options for consumers who want a quick and easy way to enjoy a hot drink without time-consuming preparation. They are typically supplied as a powder or granules that dissolve quickly in hot water, which is what makes the format so well suited to sachet, jar and single-serve retail packs.

Instant coffee manufacture runs through five defined stages. Harvested cherries are processed to remove the outer layers and extract the green coffee beans, which are then roasted at 175-230°C to develop flavour and aroma. The roasted beans are ground into a coarse powder, and the ground coffee is brewed at 82-93°C to produce a concentrated coffee extract.

The concentrate is then dried, using methods such as freeze-drying or spray-drying, to remove moisture and create the soluble particles that define the product. The finished powder or granules are packaged in jars, sachets or other formats for distribution and consumption. Each stage — roast profile, grind size, extraction temperature and choice of drying route — determines the solubility, aroma retention and cup character of the final instant product, and therefore drives the equipment selection and plant layout for the line.
