Energy efficiency is the use of less energy to perform the same task or produce the same result — in other words, eliminating energy waste. For a food processing plant this is not an abstract sustainability goal: energy represents 25% of all operating costs, so every kilowatt removed from the load goes straight to the bottom line, while also reducing carbon emissions and easing regulatory requirements.
Energy in food processing is delivered from natural resources such as coal, oil and natural gas. The bulk of it is consumed by the core unit operations — cooking, dehydration, sterilization and drying — which draw on both heat energy and electrical energy. Understanding where that heat and power actually goes, operation by operation, is the starting point for any credible reduction programme.
Energy management is the means of controlling and reducing a building's energy consumption, enabling owners and operators to cut cost and emissions together. Practical measures for food manufacturing include automating, monitoring and controlling kilowatt consumption and optimising equipment utilisation; using VFDs and motors to drastically lower energy consumption; employing energy-efficient lighting systems; and implementing a culture of energy efficiency through training sessions that discuss practices and create awareness.
