Reverse osmosis (RO) is a pressure-driven separation method used for the removal of molecules and ions from a solution. When the solution side — the side where the solute concentration is high — is subjected to a pressure greater than the osmotic pressure, solvent particles pass through a semipermeable membrane to the region where the solute concentration is low. In a food and beverage plant, that principle is what turns an incoming water supply into purified RO water fit for product formulation, utilities and drinking water.

A typical RO train follows a fixed sequence: water supply line, pre-filters, carbon filters, RO membrane, post filters and storage tank. Purified RO water is drawn off for use while impurities and sediments drain out. The value of the arrangement lies less in the membrane alone than in the filters that protect it — pre-treatment determines how long the membrane survives and how consistent the permeate quality remains.

Stage 1 is a sediment pre-filter for mechanical filtration: a superfine polypropylene cartridge that protects and extends the life of the membrane by removing sediment particles as fine as 5 microns (1 micron = 1/1000 of a mm), such as grit, dust, rust, mud and algae. Stage 2 is a granular activated carbon pre-filter for membrane protection — a special high-grade class 1 filtration media carbon cartridge added to protect the TFC (thin filter composite) membrane from chlorine degradation, with a service life of 2500 US gallons/9,463 litres. Stage 3 is the ultrafine RO membrane itself, with pore size less than 0.0005 micron, which screens out micro-particles, repels heavy metal complexes including lead and mercury, and has a remarkable affinity for oxygen, producing sparkling oxygenated water. Stage 4 is a carbon polishing post filter that gives the final polish to drinking water, ensuring removal of unwanted odours, creating superb tasting water and acting as a final check against any organic impurities.
