Organic wines
Organic wines are made from grapes grown using organic farming practices that avoid synthetic chemicals and promote environmental sustainability. These wines offer a delightful and eco-conscious choice, showcasing the harmony between nature and winemaking.
Organic wine is wine produced using organic farming practices, without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers. The term covers the entire process from vineyard to bottle, including both grape cultivation and winemaking practices. Organic vineyards avoid synthetic chemicals and rely instead on natural methods to control pests and diseases, using natural fertilizers, beneficial insects, cover crops and compost. The approach promotes environment friendly agricultural practices along with the use of fewer additives, which gives the wines a natural and purer taste.
Organic wines are usually certified by an accredited organization that verifies adherence to organic standards. Different countries have different certification bodies, such as the USDA Organic certification in the United States or the European Union Organic certification in the European Union. Certification is what allows the organic claim to be carried on the label.
A defining production difference is sulfite level. Sulfites are natural or added compounds that act as preservatives in wine; while sulfites can occur naturally during fermentation, the use of additional sulfites is limited in organic winemaking, so organic wines carry lower sulfite levels. Some producers go further into biodynamic practices, which include using specific preparations, following lunar cycles, and considering the vineyard's overall health.
Organic wines can vary in taste, quality and style just like conventional wines. The organic label primarily indicates the farming practices used in grape cultivation. That said, many organic winemakers also prioritise natural winemaking methods, which may result in wines that express their terroir more authentically.
