Indian superfoods for your health

"Superfoods pack a lot of nutritional value in the form of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Because we live in a tropical country with diverse cooking techniques, many of our favorite foods fall within this category. #pmgengineering #foodprocessing #foodindustry #foodtechnology #foodscience #engineering #science"

India's traditional pantry contains a group of ingredients now marketed globally as superfoods — amla, ashwagandha, turmeric, makhana, tulsi and the everyday household spices. For food and beverage manufacturers, these are no longer only culinary items; they are functional ingredients that carry a health claim into the finished product, and each one brings its own handling, drying, grinding and formulation requirements to the plant.

Amla is a nutrient-dense fruit that aids in the removal of toxins and the prevention of inflammation in the body. It is high in vitamin C, antioxidants and fiber, and it boosts metabolism. Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is an adaptogen known for its immune-boosting and stress-relieving qualities, and it also enhances general immunity, strength, energy and endurance. Turmeric, an important ingredient in Indian cooking, is known for its detoxification properties and is beneficial for the cardiovascular system; some studies have also pointed out that it can fight certain types of cancers.

Makhana is a light snack without the excess calories — it is good for health, tastes good, promotes cardiac health, has anti-ageing properties and has a low glycemic index. Tulsi, often known as Indian basil or Holy basil, has long been used for its healing properties and is beneficial in any form, whether dried, fresh or powdered. Black pepper, cumin, coriander, fennel, fenugreek and various other household spices are beneficial for one's general health; in moderation these spices signify goodness and can be used for detox.
