A potato chip production plant is a manufacturing facility where potato chips — also known as crisps — are produced. The product itself is simple: thinly sliced potatoes, fried or baked until crispy, then flavoured with various seasonings. The plant that makes it consistently is not simple, because every stage from raw potato intake to sealed bag influences slice quality, oil uptake, colour and final texture.
The process line is built around six stages. Potato washing and peeling machines clean and peel the incoming crop and can be either manual or automated. Slicing machines cut the potatoes into thin, even slices of the desired thickness. Blanching machines partially cook the slices and remove excess starch, which results in a crispier chip. Fryers fry the slices in oil until they are crispy and golden brown. Seasoning machines apply flavourings such as salt, barbecue, cheese, sour cream and onion. Cooling and packaging machines cool the chips after frying and pack them into bags or containers.
