Obesity is a disorder involving excessive body fat that increases the risk of health problems. It often results from taking in more calories than are burned by exercise and normal daily activities. It is measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI), calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres; anyone with a BMI of more than 30 is considered obese.
In India, nearly one in every four persons is now overweight, compared with one in every five earlier. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (ncbi) in 2019 Jan, more than 135 million individuals in India were affected by obesity. The prevalence rate of obesity and central obesity varies from 11.8% to 31.3% and 16.9%-36.3% respectively, and abdominal obesity is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVDs) in India.
