Reverse Osmosis Procedure The first step is to collect the raw milk from dairy farms. This milk is typically pasteurized to kill any harmful bacteria and to extend its shelf life. The milk is then pumped into a reverse osmosis machine, which uses a semi-permeable membrane to separate the water molecules from the milk molecules. The water molecules are too large to pass through the pores in the membrane, so they are forced through a separate channel and discarded.
