Food allergies represent a hypersensitive response in individuals to certain foods or additives. In India, about 25% of the population suffers from food allergies, a figure that's lower than the 40% seen in Western countries. Interestingly, children are more susceptible than adults, and while some outgrow their allergies, others may develop them later in life or have them for life.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission has identified common food allergens, including cow's milk, chicken eggs, legumes like peanuts, tree nuts such as almonds and cashews, seafood, cereals, and certain spices. Additionally, fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots can cause Oral Allergy Syndrome, though they are not officially listed by the Commission.
