Rice Bran Oil Processing: Extraction, Benefits, and By-products

What is Rice Bran?

Rice bran is a valuable by-product generated during the rice milling process. It is a golden-reddish cuticle that forms a layer beneath the rice husk and is removed during the polishing of the rice grain.

This nutrient-rich material contains proteins, fats, crude fiber, ash, and occasionally traces of rice hull, contributing to its ash content. It plays a critical role in the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals, aligning with modern food industry demands.

Health Benefits of Rice Bran

Rice bran is increasingly valued for its health-promoting properties. Traditionally, it has been used to:

  • Support cardiovascular health
  • Aid in cholesterol management
  • Improve liver function
  • Act as a natural antioxidant
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Help manage diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure
  • Enhance athletic performance and energy levels

These benefits highlight its growing importance in functional food production and food technology consulting.

What is Rice Bran Oil (RBO)?

Rice bran oil (RBO), also known as rice bran extract, is obtained from the germ and inner husk of the rice grain. Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, and gamma-oryzanol, it is widely used in:

  • Cooking oil applications
  • Dietary supplements
  • Skin care (especially for eczema and other rashes)

RBO is recognized for its light flavor, high smoke point, and nutritional benefits, making it ideal for both culinary and medicinal use.

Rice Bran Oil Processing Methods

1. Solvent Extraction Method (Commercial-Scale)

In this method, rice bran oil is extracted using hexane solvent, followed by a multi-step refining process, ideal for food factory setups focused on large-scale edible oil production:

  • Degumming: Removes phospholipids using citric or phosphoric acid.
  • Neutralization: Eliminates free fatty acids with sodium hydroxide (NaOH); produces Rice Acid Oil (RAO) as a by-product.
  • Bleaching: Adsorbs pigments like chlorophyll and carotenoids using activated carbon or bleaching earth.
  • Dewaxing & Winterization: Removes solid waxes at low temperatures, producing wax-rich waste.

This method yields high-quality cooking oil but also generates significant by-products requiring waste management consulting in food plants.

2. Cold Pressed Extraction Method (Premium Functional Oil)

Cold pressed RBO is extracted mechanically under mild heat (<50°C) using a screw press, making it ideal for functional food consultants and niche nutraceutical industries.

  • The oil is filtered through fine filter paper.
  • By-products include defatted rice bran and filter cake.

This method is preferred when aiming to retain bioactive compounds like γ-oryzanol, tocopherols, tocotrienols, phytosterols, carotenoids, and lecithin.

Valuable By-products in RBO Processing

Food manufacturing consultants often explore sustainable value chains. RBO processing yields by-products rich in:

  • γ-Oryzanol – supports cholesterol reduction
  • Tocopherols & Tocotrienols – powerful antioxidants
  • Phytosterols – heart-healthy compounds
  • Rice Bran Wax (RBW) – source of policosanols, effective in managing blood lipids
  • Lecithin & Carotenoids – essential for food supplements and pharma

Conclusion: The Growing Demand for Rice Bran Oil

Rice bran oil is gaining widespread popularity in the food industry for its nutritional benefits and broad applications. Whether used in large-scale food factories or in functional food startups, RBO offers:

  • Improved heart health
  • Regulation of blood glucose and pressure
  • Enhanced immune and skin health
  • Anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties

For food businesses, investing in rice bran oil processing is an opportunity to create value-added products aligned with wellness trends. This is a golden area for food processing consultants, engineering consultants, and food business advisors looking to innovate in the health oil sector.
