Pipelines and Chimney Heights — Workspace by PMG Engineering
Steam Pipeline, Fluid Pipeline, DG Chimney Height and the two boiler Chimney Height calculators: inputs, method and gotchas.
What these calculators are for
Two calculators size a pipe from a flow and a design velocity. Three
calculate a chimney (stack) height: for a DG set, and for a boiler from its
fuel firing rate or from its capacity.
Steam Pipeline
Inputs
Media — Saturated, Superheated or Wet
Steam.
Steam flow rate — kg/sec or kg/hr.
Operating pressure (gauge) — picked from 1 to 29
kg/cm²(g).
How it is calculated
Specific volume (m³/kg) is read from the steam
table at the absolute pressure: (gauge + 1.0332) kg/cm²
× 0.980665 = bar(a), interpolated between the table’s
rows.
Velocity is set by the media: Saturated 35 m/sec,
Superheated 65 m/sec, Wet Steam 25 m/sec.
Pipeline size (metres) = √(flow (kg/sec)
× specific volume × 4 ÷ (3.14 ×
velocity)).
Pipeline size (inches) = the same diameter ×
39.37.
Typical use and gotchas
The result is the calculated internal diameter. Choose the next
standard pipe size above it yourself.
Pick the pressure your gauge reads, in kg/cm²(g); its unit is
fixed. Example: 1 kg/s of saturated steam…
