Cooling Towers and Compressed Air — Workspace
Cooling Tower Performance, Compressed Air Leakage and Air Receiver Capacity: inputs, method and gotchas.
What these calculators are for
Three calculators for plant utilities: how well a cooling tower is performing
and how much water it loses, how much of a compressor’s output is
leaking away, and how big an air receiver should be.
Cooling Tower Performance
Inputs
Water inlet temperature and Water outlet
temperature — Deg C.
Dry bulb temperature and Wet bulb
temperature — Deg C.
Water flow rate — m³/hr, LPM, L/sec, US GPM
or m³/sec.
TDS inlet water and TDS circulating
water — ppm, whole numbers.
How it is calculated
Temperature range = difference between water inlet and
outlet.
Temperature approach = difference between water outlet
and wet bulb.
Effectiveness = range ÷ (range +
approach).
Evaporation loss (m³/hr) = 0.00085 × 1.8
× range × water flow rate (m³/hr).
Cycles of concentration (COC) = TDS circulating
÷ TDS inlet.
Blowdown (m³/hr) = evaporation loss ÷
(cycles of concentration − 1).
Typical use and gotchas
Use it for a performance check from site readings, and to estimate
